PRINTMAKING, ETCHING, DRAWING
"This etching piece was originally drawn at Matsumoto castle in Japan, or commonly known as "Crow Castle." One of the small number of intact and original wooden battle castles dotting the Japanese landscape. A highly photographed and drawn location, nonetheless still a powerful and equally serene image transferred onto a copper plate.
The viewer sits before the castle shaded by the harsh sun under a pergola. The first process in the etching piece was a softground outline and impression, followed by an aquatint fade over the sky area. A number of subsequent hardground etches followed to define the piece into it's final state.
